Handiwork of the Master

How can we get to know God better? Here are two ways that will help us get to know our great Creator and loving Father.

Do you want to get to know God better? The answer should be, “Yes, yes, yes!” God is the greatest, most loving and most powerful Being to exist. On top of all that, He’s also our Father, Creator, Savior and Lord. There is no one more important to get to know!

How to know God

The best way to get to know God is to read His Bible. Every word in the Bible is God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16), so reading the Bible is definitely the best way to read God’s mind. But we can’t just read the Bible and automatically know God. We have to diligently search the Scriptures and prove what the Bible says to ourselves (Acts 17:11).

Yet there is also another way that, joined with Bible study, can help us to know God. In Romans 1:20 the apostle Paul tells us, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”

God, as the great Creator, has given us a universe full of His handiwork! A glimpse of God’s masterpiece, paired with a study of the Bible, can show us a lot about God.

Remember your Creator

Glancing through the Bible reveals God as the Creator. God’s role as the Creator of the whole universe is mentioned from the first page of Genesis (Genesis 1:1) through to some of the last pages of Revelation (Revelation 14:6-7). In Ecclesiastes 12:1 we are told by wise King Solomon to “remember now your Creator in the days of your youth.”

So how do we remember our Creator? And how do we get to know Him better?

God has given us many ways to remember Him as our Creator. From the first week of creation He established the Sabbath day—a day that helps us reflect back on creation (Genesis 2:1-4 and Exodus 20:8-11). And, as Paul tells us in Romans 1, God’s creation can also remind us of God’s role as the Creator of us and the universe. The creation shows us the power and majesty of the God we worship.

God cares

One of the primary lessons that we can learn from God’s creation is that He cares for us. All over the created realm, we see evidence of His care. We are learning that everything in space is positioned just right so that there can be life on earth. Closer to home, we see the trees and plants that give us oxygen to breathe as well as removing the poisons we breathe out. On top of that, there are countless other parts of nature that are essential for human survival.

Yet not all of God’s creation is for the sole purpose of our survival. There are more flowers throughout the world than any of us would be able to name. Why are there so many flowers? Because we have a God who appreciates both beauty and variety—and has enabled us to appreciate them too.

It seems God has also created other things for our enjoyment. An example of this could be nature’s little helicopter—the hummingbird. The psychological benefit of seeing such an amazing little bird flying around is wonderful. Why did God put the hummingbird, and other creatures like it, on this earth? Christ said, “How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11). God enjoys providing gifts and amusements to His children.

Nature supports the Bible

God cares for His people and wants the best for them. This is only one of the many lessons that we can learn about God from His creation.

Bible study is the best way to know God, but studying God’s creation makes a pretty good supplement.
